Missing a Deadline

Prompt

Tell me about a time you missed a deadline. What happened and how did you handle it?

How this round runs

I will pick one story and drill into it — when you first knew, who you told, and what you changed since. A near-miss you "just barely" hit will not satisfy me, so bring a real slip you owned.

Model answer

Pick a deadline you genuinely missed — not a near-miss — where the cause was something you can own honestly. Lead with one sentence of situation, then spend your time on when you knew it would slip and what you did the moment you knew.

A strong answer puts the decision in the first person ("I realized on day 8…", "I told my lead…"), is honest about the cause without blaming tools or other people, shows you raised the flag early rather than at the deadline, and ends with the concrete change you made to how you estimate or surface risk now.

Signals — what a strong answer shows
  • A real miss with an honest, first-person account of the cause
  • Flagged the slip early — named the day you knew, not the day it was due
  • Said specifically who you told and what you offered (options, not just bad news)
  • Closed with a concrete change to how you flag risk now
Follow-ups — where it goes next
  • When did you first know it was going to slip?
  • Who did you tell, and how long after you knew?
  • What would you have done if you couldn't get an extension?
  • What do you do differently now to catch this earlier?
